Flying while fat can be a daunting experience.

You’re already dealing with the stress of travelling, and now you have to worry about how your body will be perceived by others. Will you be able to fit into your seat? Will the person next to you be okay with having their space invaded? Will the flight attendant judge you?

These are all valid concerns, but don’t worry! Although we have lots of guides and information on flying while fat here on Plus Size Travel Too, we wanted to put our top 8 tips into a handy little post for you:

– Before you travel, check your airline’s policies on flying as a plus size person. Some airlines are more accommodating than others, and some have specific policies in place for larger passengers.

– Another great tip to bear in mind before your flight is to speak to other fat people about their experiences. There are lots of great Facebook groups that have been created as a safe space to discuss your concerns but our favourite is DEFINITELY Fat Girls Traveling created by Annette Richmond and the girls from Fat Girls Guide.

– Book your seat as early as possible. This will help to ensure that you have a seat that is comfortable for you, and it will also help to avoid any possible seating conflicts.

– If you can’t book your seat in advance, or if your airline doesn’t have specific policies for larger passengers, arrive at the airport as early as possible and ask to speak to a customer service representative. Explain your situation and ask if they can help to get you a better seat.

– Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You’ll be spending a lot of time sitting down, so it’s important to be as comfortable as possible. It also helps to have something you can easily take off in a small bathroom. You don’t have a lot of wiggle room in there so anything too complicated may make the situation worse.

– Don’t feel ashamed to advocate for what you need. Whether it’s a seatbelt extender or use of a bigger bathroom, your safety and comfort during your flight are important.

– If you’re nervous about being on a plane, try repeating a few positive affirmations to yourself to help calm your nerves. It’s natural to feel a bit anxious, but remember that you have just as much right to be on that plane as anyone else.

– If you’re feeling self-conscious, try to relax and remember that you’re not the only person on the plane who is overweight. Chances are, most of the other passengers are just worried about getting to their destination safely and on time.

We hope these tips help you feel more confident and comfortable when flying as a plus size person. Remember that you have just as much right to be on that plane as anyone else, and don’t be afraid to speak up for what you need. Safe travels!
