Interview: Plus Size Surfing Tips With Elizabeth from Curvy Surfer Girl

Whether you're struggling to find a wetsuit to fit or you're worried about being able to stand up on the board, surfing while plus size can be incredibly daunting.

While it does come with some difficulties, here at Plus Size Travel Too we are firm believers that surfing is for absolutely everyone. Luckily, there are lots of other people out there that feel the same too. We had the chance to chat with Elizabeth, otherwise known as Curvy Surfer Girl, to find out her top tips for those that may be feeling a little nervous about getting in the water.

Hello Elizabeth! Please tell us a little bit about you.

I’m the founder of Curvy Surfer Girl, a body-positive movement for female surfers. I’m also a certified free-diver, entrepreneur, model, writer, nature lover, traveller, and all-around Hawai’i girl 🥰

How did you get started with surfing?

I started surfing about 3.5 years ago with @ohanasurfproject & their locals-only surf program. I continue to receive instruction today from my incredible surf instructor Chelsea.

Have you ever had any difficulties when surfing while plus size?

The most challenging part of surfing at my heaviest & even today is finding performance surf suits that fit properly.

Surfing requires a lot of strength and skill that develops with time and practice. Everyone is capable of surfing with practice and maybe a little instruction!

Do you have any tips and tricks when it comes to finding the right surf gear?

Personally, I love surfing bigger boards while everyone’s preference is different I think a board between 9’6-11ft is a great choice for a more beginner surfer. There’s more board to keep your body above the water and it makes it easier to catch waves bc you don’t have to move as much water to get going.

I have a highlight reel of swim reviews featuring my favourite brands. While there aren’t as many options as I’d hope for our community I’m working hard to encourage women to leave comments and send messages to brands to increase their size range so we can be better represented with performance surf suits. In the near future, I hope to launch my own line to deal with this very issue!

What is your best piece of advice for a plus size person looking to go for their first surf lesson?

I would absolutely recommend a surf school with quality surf instructors that are excited to help you learn to surf!

If anyone for any reason tells you you’re too XYZ to surf DON’T accept that answer. What they really should say is “I’m not interested or don’t possess the skill to teach you to surf”.

A quality surf instructor knows many strategies and techniques to teach people of any age, ability, and size. If you're visiting O’ahu I highly recommend @ohanasurfproject .

Lastly, surf lessons teach you which breaks are safe to surf for your level, the etiquette of surfing, and most importantly the techniques that help you become an independent successful surfer.

What are three top tips for plus size surfing?

1. Believe you can surf!
2. Take action towards your vision of surfing by finding a quality surf instructor.
3. Make sure you have the right equipment/suit etc and HAVE FUN!! You’re surfing 🥳🥳🥳

Where can we find you on social?
