Interview: Plus Size Ski Wear And Snow Clothing With Monica Balon Of Plus Snow

Photo: iCurvy

As a plus size traveller, it can be incredibly hard to find the correct gear in your size, especially when it comes to things like ski wear and snow clothing. To most brands, plus size options don't seem like a priority because they do not believe that plus size people want to be active, just like their straight-sized counterparts. It's a negative stereotype that honestly, needs to be changed.

Thankfully, there are a number of businesses out there that understand that plus-size people want the opportunity to ski and snowboard too.

I had the chance of chatting with Monica Balon, the owner of Plus Snow, to find out exactly what they're doing to help make the snow sports industry more inclusive.

Hello Monica, please tell us about your business.

Hello! My business sells high quality and technical plus size snow clothing for plus size people in sizes 18-30 for women and XL-10XL in men. They're for skiing, snowboarding and just generally enjoying wintery conditions.

We also sell a lot of long warm winter coats to people travelling to cool and cold far off wintery places like Iceland and Antarctica.

We understand that people who aren't in a 'straight' size can still ski, snowboard, travel and play in the snow, so we have also recently expanded our range to include rain outerwear for those wanting to hike and get outdoors in wet weather like camping, fishing, and just general outdoor play.

Why did you get started?

When I was a little girl my mum had a second-hand ski shop. She started off because it was expensive to get ski gear for families and she wanted to make skiing more accessible for everyone.

Later in life, we owned and ran the shop together, joined by my husband later in life. 5 years ago we closed down the bricks and mortar shop and just moved to purely online sales, which included our plus size range of clothing.

In this first season, I had a customer recommend that I should have a website just for plus size ski gear. I thought it was a great idea and 9 months later, Plus Snow was born. Since then I have been working with manufacturers and industry leaders, innovators and influencers, trying to make skiing and snowboarding more accessible for everyone which in my case, includes plus-size people.

Over the past 5 years, I have learnt so much about plus size bodies, as it happens, I am not plus size. The most important thing I have learnt is that plus-size bodies can be just as strong, as able, as fit, as determined and as healthy as someone who is straight-sized.

It's clear that the outdoor industry underrepresents the plus-size community in advertising, gear availability and mentors, however, I feel that is on the brink of change.

It's exciting to be part of a movement.

What plus-size snow clothing do you offer?

We offer quality ski, snowboard, rain and travel clothing. As part of our range, we also include layering pieces which you could wear as part of your activewear outfits.

Many of our travel customers love our merino wool thermals and zip-up jackets which are super practical on their travels or just in their daily wear.

Do you have any tips for plus size travellers looking to start skiing?

Wow, I have so many tips and tricks!!

1. Do your research about choosing a mountain and resort which is well catered to beginner skiers. Get prepared early.

2. Get the best gear you can afford. Being wet and cold will make your experience miserable. Frumpy or tight ski gear will make you feel uncomfortable.

3. Look for support in some online groups and travellers who might have had similar experiences. I have found the plus-size travel community very supportive

4. Get a lesson on the first day.

5. Have fun with it and be prepared for the hit to your wallet. Skiing is awesome and fun, but also exhausting and expensive.

6. Enjoy the apres scene. One of the best parts of skiing is after you're done, even if that starts at 10am, haha!

Where can people buy your snow gear?

Are there any words of encouragement you would like to leave plus-size travellers with?

Nature has no size requirement. All the best growth in life comes from escaping your comfort zone. Get outdoors, your body will thank you.

  1. Love this! Come to think of it, I don't think I've EVER had a pair of snow pants that truly fit me.
