My Personal Experiences Of Physical Exercise On Group Tours by Rhian Westbury

As someone who has been plus-size their whole life, it’s become a bit of a ‘norm’ for me. I still cover up as much as possible when I’m in my swimwear, and even in the height of summer I rarely go sleeveless, but it’s part of my every day now and something I don’t seem to notice.

Despite being plus-sized my love for travelling has never wained. Although my subconscious thoughts about being uncomfortable sunbathing around a pool may have influenced my love of cities breaks as opposed to beach trips.

I’ve done a fair few organised tours over the years. A few as a teenager with my parents and a few solo as an adult. And one thing I do always look at within a tour is the physical aspect. I’m someone who loves to walk and can walk quite far but I’m not designed for long-distance hikes or steep climbs.

When I booked my trip to Morocco over New Year 2015/16 with Exodus I knew it contained a mountain climb in the High Atlas Mountains. Before going through with my booking, I checked whether this was optional or compulsory. 

I liked the idea of being able to choose to do it because I felt I could as opposed to it being the only option to get to our next accommodation for example.

On the day I felt brave and decided I’d go ahead with the hike. Our tour had a lot of older people in their 50’s and 60’s on it so I thought if they can do it, so can I. But they were certainly much fitter than me. Our hike was 4 hours up and then a few hours back down so the day was full-on taking us around 2400m high.

I won’t lie, it was one of the toughest things I’ve done, mainly because there were no real paths, just mule tracks and rocks moved underfoot. But the group were incredible in helping me throughout. I was the slowest person walking, but the group always made sure someone was behind me so I didn’t get left behind. And when we were scrambling down the kindness of others took away from the aches and pains I was experiencing.

When I went on my first Trek America trip to Hawaii in March 2017 I knew it would be a trip with plenty of time on our feet. My tour was pretty small with just 5 of us which actually helped as I didn’t feel like I was lost in the crowd. 

But of course, I was the only plus-sized person on the trip.

Camping itself with putting up and taking down tents is physical exercise in itself especially in the heat. We trekked one of the volcano creators in Hawaii which was quite tough as it was really steep. But thankfully the walk itself only took a few hours and I had time to relax afterwards. Our tour leader was great as well making sure I didn’t end up lagging behind and keeping my spirits up during the particularly tough bits.

For me, the hardest part of the trip was the bike ride. Now I don’t know how to ride a bike. It’s never something I learnt how to do growing up so I worried about my options. I let the tour guide know right at the start and this is probably the only downfall of the trip was that there wasn’t really an alternative I could do. The bike ride was to ride out to see the lava hit the sea and to ride around the national park by the active volcano.

The bike ride should take about 4 hours, but a walk would have taken about double that so it wasn’t an option for me to do. As there was no other option for me I ended up sitting in the Trek America tour van for the whole time which was far from fun but there wasn’t really much I could do.

A few weeks after getting back from Hawaii I was in Crete and ‘accidentally’ trekked about 16km through Samaria Gorge after we ended up at the wrong entrance for the longer walk as opposed to the shorter one. Again it was incredibly tough with high altitudes, extreme heat and a finite time we had to be back to get the last boat home. 

But I did it, and as someone plus-sized who isn’t the fittest, that’s something I’ve learnt. Almost anything is possible if you put your mind to it. It may take you longer than someone smaller or fitter and it may cause you more aches and pains afterwards...

But if you’re determined you can achieve so much.
